He touched many lives

I had the privilege of going on a trip with Larry only once. A few weeks ago, I joined him and two other Mountaineers for a winter scramble to Camp Muir. Larry said he needed to "get in shape" and hadn't gotten out enough. That later proved to be a self-effacing bit of sprezzatura - as he flew up the snow field with little effort. The weather that day was typical for the time of year up on the Muir Snowfield: bad visibility, near to complete white-out, and deep powder most of the way. One would wonder how such a trip could possibly be enjoyable - well it all depends on who you go with, and that's my memory of Larry. It could have been -20 degrees with 50 mph winds, or blowing horizontal rain and the trip would have left only pleasant memories thanks to the group we went up with - and especially because of Larry's cheerful, friendly, fun personality. I wonder how many other hundreds of trips Larry must have made, and how many people he touched in similar ways. Over the years, people will be talking about this or that great trip they did, and Larry's name will come up as a prominent aspect of that adventure, and he will be missed.
