Special
Exposure Situations
While
experimenting on your own is paramount to understanding photographic techniques,
here are a few suggested exposure settings for some not so common shooting
situations. These can serve as a starting point for your own experiments.
When both an aperture and a shutter
speed setting is given, ISO 100 film is assumed
Waterfalls & Rivers
|
1/2 sec or longer for a silky affect.
1/4 to 1/10 sec for streaks.
|
Moon at Night
|
Use Sunny
f16 Rule and overexpose 1/2 to 1 stop. The moon is a slightly brighter
than middle toned object being lit by the sun.
|
Moon-Lit Landscape
|
5 - 10 min at f2.8 for full-moon.
15 - 30 min at f2.8 for half-moon.
|
Star-Lit Landscape
|
4 - 6 hours at f2.8.
|
City Lights at Night or Dusk
|
10 sec at f4.
|
Fireworks
|
A couple bursts at f5.6, but not for
more than 20 sec if including city lights in image.
|
Lightning
|
Set shutter speed on "bulb" and hold shutter open
for 1 - 3 flashes at f8, but not for more
than 40 sec if including city lights in image. Tripod or firm support
required.
|
Again, these are just starting points for your own experimentation.
People will have differing opinions about what constitutes an proper exposure,
especially for nighttime exposures.

Happy Shooting
