Hanford Reach is the only major free-flowing section of the Columbia River in the United States. Hanford Reach National Monument protects over 196,000 acres of open shrub steppe habitat, including these dunes standing on the White Bluffs escarpment.
A pack of coyotes down by the river serenaded me as I made this image on an early-May evening. The extreme backlighting and the extreme depth-of-field captured in this image required combining 9 shots: 3 different exposures at each of 3 different focus distances.
